Friday I’m in Love: Vintage Campers

Posted on: December 10th, 2010 by Andrea No Comments

Work is busy, the stress of the holidays is upon us, I haven’t started my Christmas shopping, it’s cold outside, and there’s already over a foot of snow in the city. I can’t help but dwell on the fact that I ought to be relaxed and sun-kissed from a Caribbean vacation…except I’m not…because it got canceled.

I feel like running away.

Or perhaps driving away in a home away from home. Not some modern “recreational vehicle” monstrosity, though. In my fantasy, I run away in a super fantastic and kitschy vintage camper.

Like Constance. Yes…she has a name. Every vehicle ought to have a name…my Toyota Echo, for instance, is named Erica. But let’s get back to Constance, a 1957 Sprite 14 Caravan. This gem is available to rent for photo shoots about 30 miles north of London through the SnailTrail, which also rents vintage VW campers for actual camping. See more fun and colourful campers on their flickr photo stream.

Looking at a setup like Constance, you can really see how perfect and dreamy a cute camper could be…and even though it may be small, how it could truly become your dream home…a home that rolls you right in to your dreams of hitting the road, and exploring the world. Which is why I love what this original painting Dream Home by one of my favourite bloggers, Elsie Flannigan signifies. It’s perfectly adorable, and perfectly accurate:

Speaking of adorable. More and more vintage campers are cropping us as super cute places of business…which is convenient, because of course it means your place of business can move places! Like this vintage Shasta trailer by Enjoy Cupcakes which can be found catering special functions throughout the entire Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Barbara County in California.

And ultimately…the whole idea of a home or place of business that moves, places the emphasis on the act of moving, rather than on the actual destination. The focus becomes The Journey, as expressed in this pick-your-own-colour print by another favourite of mine, Vol25:

I like the blue, coral and red campers best!

…But for the ultimate in red campers, the prize goes to this oil on canvas painting of a splitscreen VW camper by Gemma Welch. I love that the colours are both vibrant and muted at the same time, and I especially love the juxtaposition of the red and white camper against the beautiful blue sky.
