Friday I’m in Love: Flamingos

In just over a month we’ll be having a baby girl. I decided we’d go very girly for her room colour – possibly to make up for the fact that I haven’t had a typically girly colour in my bedroom since I was 14 (once I painted over my childhood pink, I’ve had green, blue, blue and yellow, mint green, yellow, and now asparagus green…I don’t count the sick peachy colour that came with the temporary digs we occupied for a year while searching for a house to buy).

When picking the actual colour, I wanted something bold and colourful. Something that shouted out GIRL, but that wasn’t the typical pale baby pink. I drew my inspiration from this painting/print by Elise Blaha Cripe, and ultimately went with Benjamin Moore’s Coral Gables.

It’s stunning, and a little in your face. I love it. Once the room is actually complete, I’ll share it with you (for now, it doesn’t look at all like a nursery, as I’m using it as a temporary, somewhat bare and echo-y office).

In the meantime, though, I’m loving everything to do with flamingos and colours inspired by them:

Cute? Too much? I’m thinking so long as I don’t go overboard (think plastic lawn flamingos) I should be ok!

Friday I’m in Love: Comfort

So the weather outside is frightful….at least it’s been mostly frightful. Either bitter cold (I believe those were the exact words used on The Weather Network the other day – bitter cold), or snowing like crazy. And though I don’t particularly mind the snowing part (it looks very pretty), it can make getting around a real hassle, especially when you drive a Toyota Echo.

Don’t get me wrong…I love Erica. I’ve had her since 2005 and she still does a great job getting me from points A to B in most weather. But I’ve become spoiled driving the hubby’s Outback, so no matter how well my little car manages, she just doesn’t compare to all-wheel-drive (she is far cuter, though).

But I digress.

The crappy weather makes me want to just throw on some comfy clothes, curl up in an armchair (I don’t believe we own an armchair, but whatever), drink gallons of tea (ideally it’d be caffeinated), and read a good book.

I realize, of course, that I haven’t had the figure to wear overalls since I was about 14….especially that particular $550 pair from Madewell. But the feeling of overalls is what I’m going for here. You know. No waist. And who’s to say my comfy ensemble couldn’t include a comfy knitted (and toddler friendly) necklace? And beautiful glasses? (How else am I supposed to read?) And that awesome awesome top? (Seriously…go take a look at AryaSense…she makes some beautiful – and comfy looking – stuff.)

Friday I’m in Love: Whimsical Pink and Grey

It’s been snowing pretty steadily all week…and though there’s not too much accumulation, it is accumulating, leaving a light white frosting on everything. Which has, of course, snapped me out of my “it’s autumn” reverie, and put me into a more wintery and festive frame of mind.

As a result, I’ve dug out my winter gear and have begun thinking a little more seriously about my Christmas shopping, which still needs doing. And by “still needs doing” I mean that all of it still needs to be done…it’s kind of depressing, really. So as a world class procrastinator, I’ve generally been avoiding the subject altogether.

Instead I’ve started dreaming about a slightly whimsical and festive ensemble that I could wear…somewhere…over the holidays. Nothing too fancy (it’s not my thing), but with just a little touch of fun, pretty, and an element of the impractical:

There’s no Christmas-y red or green to be seen anywhere in the above. I think my inspiration might be more along the lines of early pink sunsets cast against (dirty grey?) snow….who says you have to dress like a Christmas tree for the holidays, anyway?

Friday I’m in Love: Orange Hues

The pretty part of Fall is over in Montreal. Except for a few stragglers the trees are mostly bare, lawns are covered in dead leaves, and we’re even getting a few flurries here and there.

Notwithstanding the slow but inevitable shift towards winter, I’m still in a Fall state of mind. Maybe it’s because our neighbours to the south have yet to celebrate their Thanksgiving….which, admittedly, I’ve been known to celebrate as well (hello? two opportunities to have Thanksgiving turkey?). Which might explain why I’m still being drawn to oranges and browns (and pinks!) rather than to something more wintery.

Here’s what I’ve been dreaming of wearing these days:

scarf | cloche | knit sweater | clutch | glasses | fox pumps

So yeah…..a number of these items are crazy expensive. I did mention I was just dreaming, right?

Friday I’m in Love: Fall Wardrobes

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved the Fall. Maybe it has something to do with new beginnings….or at least the idea of new beginnings. Which is strange, because of course the Fall is when nature sheds her plumage and goes dormant for the winter, which seems more of an ending than a beginning.

Unless, you’re in school, that is.

I can remember that sense of anticipation for a new school year. The feeling that this year was going to be different than all of the previous ones. That you had the opportunity to completely start over. That this year you’d finally feel like you fit in. That you’d find your new very best friend. That you’d get a boyfriend. That somehow you’d be an entirely new and improved version of yourself.

Or at least your new back-to-school wardrobe would be.

The Fall is such a great season to dress for. Cool, crisp air combined with a sun that’s still strong enough to warrant the removal of layers….and of course the leaves. They set the whole colour palette for the Fall.

I still dream of new Fall wardrobes…though as a stay at home, and now experimental work at home, mom…I don’t really need one. But if I did….this is what I’d get:

theodosia blouse | manchester tall boot | fillmore in redwood ash | sami arctic tribe lasso necklace | wool cape

And while I whooshed around (probably looking ridiculous) in my cape, I’d tote along my cute little Boo in his own – very practical and comfortable – Fall outfit:

hut print leggings | hat print sweatshirt | classic suede-like moccasin

Please tell me I’m not the only one who wants to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe every Fall…also please tell me it’s not weird that I still get excited about the idea of back-to-school shopping (don’t get me wrong…the actual back to school part of back-to-school generally stressed me out, and I don’t miss it one bit…but new clothes? And new stationery?!? Well…I guess that’s best left for another post!).
