My Christmas Wish List

So I’ve got a good chunk of my Christmas shopping done. I’m not finished, but I think I can kind of sort of see the finish line. Maybe. I’ve got a few more things to pick up for Boo Boo, and one or two additional items for family. I don’t know what those items are yet. That’s the tricky part.

In an effort to make things less tricky for those shopping for me (!), I actually have a Christmas list this year. It’s not a huge list….not all items on it are particularly practical to buy as a gift…but it’s a list all the same. Here it is, in case you’re curious, or are looking for ideas for your own lists:

Blog Life | A Beautiful Mess
This is an online course about…you guessed it! Blogging. I’ve been following A Beautiful Mess for a few years now…long before sisters Elsie and Emma turned it into a million dollar business. They could probably teach me a few tricks. (Bonus: I qualify for a discount due to a past course subscription…so I’ll probably be buying this for myself).

Fillmore in Redwood Ash | Warby Parker
I’ve mentioned these glasses previously – so at least I’m consistent. I love that they’re practically tortoise shell, but with a little kick of red. Obviously, since I’m blind, I’d kinda like them with my prescription…extra thin lenses, too, so I don’t look like I have coke bottles on my face (do people still get that reference? please tell me yes…otherwise I feel so so old).

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling |
Though I’d seen her in The Office, I only really discovered Mindy Kaling recently when I started watching The Mindy Project on Netflix. It’s awesome. Laugh out loud funny. So cute. I kinda fell in love with her, and could use a little Mindy humour while I wait for the next season.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler |
I love Amy Poehler. I think she’s smart, funny, and extremely talented. I desperately want to read this book.

iPhone 6 | Apple
So my iPhone 4 is feeling….dated. It’s slow. Apps optimized for much faster phones run slowly. The camera is somewhat lacking (it’s why I’ve basically stopped using it – the crummy quality of the pictures it takes depresses me). I need an upgrade. The only thing that’s been holding me back is the “new” minimum monthly spend all of the phone companies now have in order to get it and other “Plus” devices. I’ll eventually just suck it up and do it. But until I do…it’s on my list.

Mammoth Evo Clogs | Crocs
I feel bad about this entry on my list. I got a new pair of slippers last year from my in-laws. Slippers I’d picked out. And they fit great and were comfortable. Until the wooly insides got compressed. Suddenly they were a little too big…and the heels? They never really broke in or got malleable, and consequently rip my ankles up. Not great. So I’ve been eyeing the Crocs my husband was gifted last year…when he first received them, he confided to me that he “despised Crocs, and would never ever wear them because they looked ridiculous”….except they happened to be really comfortable, and he wears them all of the time. So yeah. I’d like to give ’em a shot.

Handwriting Name Rings | Silver Promo
The author of one of my favourite blogs wears a series of name rings instead of her wedding band. Each ring has the name of one of her children, and her husband. As soon as I saw it, I fell in love with the idea and started plotting how and when I could get my own set (to wear on my right hand, though…I love my engagement and wedding rings too much to supplant them). SPOILER ALERT: I’m totally getting these rings.

Friday I’m in Love: Whimsical Pink and Grey

It’s been snowing pretty steadily all week…and though there’s not too much accumulation, it is accumulating, leaving a light white frosting on everything. Which has, of course, snapped me out of my “it’s autumn” reverie, and put me into a more wintery and festive frame of mind.

As a result, I’ve dug out my winter gear and have begun thinking a little more seriously about my Christmas shopping, which still needs doing. And by “still needs doing” I mean that all of it still needs to be done…it’s kind of depressing, really. So as a world class procrastinator, I’ve generally been avoiding the subject altogether.

Instead I’ve started dreaming about a slightly whimsical and festive ensemble that I could wear…somewhere…over the holidays. Nothing too fancy (it’s not my thing), but with just a little touch of fun, pretty, and an element of the impractical:

Pink and Grey Ensemble

earrings | bracelet | shrug | necklace | boots

There’s no Christmas-y red or green to be seen anywhere in the above. I think my inspiration might be more along the lines of early pink sunsets cast against (dirty grey?) snow….who says you have to dress like a Christmas tree for the holidays, anyway?

Friday I’m in Love: Orange Hues

The pretty part of Fall is over in Montreal. Except for a few stragglers the trees are mostly bare, lawns are covered in dead leaves, and we’re even getting a few flurries here and there.

Notwithstanding the slow but inevitable shift towards winter, I’m still in a Fall state of mind. Maybe it’s because our neighbours to the south have yet to celebrate their Thanksgiving….which, admittedly, I’ve been known to celebrate as well (hello? two opportunities to have Thanksgiving turkey?). Which might explain why I’m still being drawn to oranges and browns (and pinks!) rather than to something more wintery.

Here’s what I’ve been dreaming of wearing these days:

scarf | cloche | knit sweater | clutch | glasses | fox pumps

So yeah…..a number of these items are crazy expensive. I did mention I was just dreaming, right?

Be careful what you wish for

Not too long ago I suddenly realized Boo was growing out of most of his pants, and that he had very few pairs left that fit him – we were cycling through the same few pairs over and over again.

I happened to mention this shortage of pants to both grandmothers and I suspect the thought of their grandson going pant-less this Fall was unacceptable. They immediately got to work finding Boo some bottoms. They thrifted for pants. They bought pants for his birthday. I even got a few pairs of my brothers’ old pants, circa 1976.

And wouldn’t you know it? We’re now experiencing a pant surplus! There are jogging pants; track pants; cargo pants; jeans; corduroys; overalls; khakis; trousers…you name it, we’ve got it in abundance in red, blue, black, brown, grey and beige.

More pants

They are not, thankfully, all the exact same size. Both the labels and the physical sizes vary, so there are some that will fit Boo perfectly now, some later, and some of them much much later….or, another way to look at it, is that some will fit him well with a disposable diaper on, and others will fit with a cloth diaper on. It’s really amazing if you look just at the labels, and then compare the “same sizes” across brands, or even within brands how the variations in size are remarkable – my mother-in-law picked up a few 6-12 month pants which fit Boo Boo just fine. They’re HUGE!

Thanks ladies! (and please…no more pants for the next little while!)

Friday I’m in Love: Fall Wardrobes

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved the Fall. Maybe it has something to do with new beginnings….or at least the idea of new beginnings. Which is strange, because of course the Fall is when nature sheds her plumage and goes dormant for the winter, which seems more of an ending than a beginning.

Unless, you’re in school, that is.

I can remember that sense of anticipation for a new school year. The feeling that this year was going to be different than all of the previous ones. That you had the opportunity to completely start over. That this year you’d finally feel like you fit in. That you’d find your new very best friend. That you’d get a boyfriend. That somehow you’d be an entirely new and improved version of yourself.

Or at least your new back-to-school wardrobe would be.

The Fall is such a great season to dress for. Cool, crisp air combined with a sun that’s still strong enough to warrant the removal of layers….and of course the leaves. They set the whole colour palette for the Fall.

I still dream of new Fall wardrobes…though as a stay at home, and now experimental work at home, mom…I don’t really need one. But if I did….this is what I’d get:

theodosia blouse | manchester tall boot | fillmore in redwood ash | sami arctic tribe lasso necklace | wool cape

And while I whooshed around (probably looking ridiculous) in my cape, I’d tote along my cute little Boo in his own – very practical and comfortable – Fall outfit:

hut print leggings | hat print sweatshirt | classic suede-like moccasin

Please tell me I’m not the only one who wants to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe every Fall…also please tell me it’s not weird that I still get excited about the idea of back-to-school shopping (don’t get me wrong…the actual back to school part of back-to-school generally stressed me out, and I don’t miss it one bit…but new clothes? And new stationery?!? Well…I guess that’s best left for another post!).
