Show & Tell: Norwegian Wood

So I figure I need to get this post up now, before the end of January…because really? Should I still be making references to Christmas? Probably not…but I will, anyway.

For this past Christmas, I did some shopping at the winter Puces Pop craft fair, where I stumbled across Angie Johnson – the designer behind Norwegian Wood.

Now, I won’t lie. I’d heard of Angie before (and I told her so)…her online shop iheartnorwegianwood is already among my Etsy favourites, I’d heard of her local shop, Headquarters Galerie + Boutique (which actually closed its doors last week), and I remembered salivating over her beautiful DIY wedding photos posted on Design*Sponge this past summer. No…I’m not stalking her. I just have a good memory when someone does something really really well. Rather, I admire her…and the fact she’s based in my hometown helps, too.

Standing at her table, looking over her gorgeous creations, what I really wanted to do was buy one of her maximum fringe necklaces for….ummm….myself:

…But then I remembered I was there to shop for others (you know…it being Christmas, and all), and instead opted for a beautiful and playful pair of fringe earrings like these for my sister-in-law (only the ones I bought her are “grown-up” pink, and she just loves them…they look so special on her):

And because I absolutely couldn’t resist (I’m not superwoman, after all), I picked up a little something for myself…this very pretty bobby pin to help dress up my hair when it needs a pick-me-up (which is often):

FYI: If you’re in the Montreal area, you may be interested to know that Puces Pop has announced another craft fair on March 5-6…any takers?

Show & Tell: The Candy Thief

As already expressed elsewhere, I’m incompetent when it comes to styling my own hair…so I take all the help I can get.

Which is why I was so excited when I stumbled across The Candy Thief’s beautiful assortment of very colourful and unique headbands. I almost swooned, and proceeded to spend far too much time during a recent trip to Niagara Falls perusing her flickr stream showcasing even more amazing headbands, as well as other creations (such as handbags, pillows, and skirts).

Friendly, open to requests, and very quick to respond, artist/designer Casey Dwyer (the woman behind The Candy Thief) was very helpful and willing to photograph and show me a number of headbands not yet for sale in her Etsy Shop, to see if she had something in my favourite colour palette…

And lo and behold…she did! I ordered an Alexa Headband (modeled above) in various shades of blue, green and grey. What I love about this model, is that it’s quite large, and spans most of your head…making it more of a statement piece…it’s made of multiple layers of felt that is both stitched, and hand-printed. The craftsmanship is just beautiful (as is the whole effect). It’s become an instant favourite, and I just love how it immediately dresses up my boring hair! Sweet!

Friday I’m in Love: Braids

I’ve been aiming to grow my hair out for about a year now, and I think it’s coming along quite nicely (I’m blessed with fast growing hair). As it continues to get longer though, I’ve become acutely aware of two very important things:

1. I desperately need a trim (it’s embarrassing how many split ends I have)
2. I am a terribly boring hair stylist. Seriously.

I’d like to think it’s due to a lack of time. It’s just faster to pin back my bangs, throw my hair into a ponytail, or throw on a headband (I’ve got some real pretty ones, too, from Blue Eyed Freckle, and The Candy Thief). But I know that’s not true…

You see, there’s a reason I used to keep my hair short, and mostly focus on changing my hair colour for fun: I couldn’t do anything else. So this week, I’m lusting after hairstyles I desperately wish I could create for myself….

Or, in my wildest hairstyling dreams, I could do something like this (source):

Who am I kidding, I’d even settle for a more interesting ponytail, like this one (source):
